A “Dr. Wald” trail invites you to enjoy forest bathing, the Rennsteig Pond beckons you to take a dip in the refreshing water, and an extensive network of trails is a paradise for hiking, biking, and jogging, as it offers every conceivable type of route. Since Schmiedefeld lies on the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, there aren’t many meters of elevation gain to tackle, but depending on your mood, you can also head down into valleys, past reservoirs, and back up again! Running is in the DNA of the people of Schmiedefeld; the town is the annual destination for the GutsMuths Rennsteig Run, Germany’s largest cross-country race.
